A Marion County man is seeking more than $50,000 in damages for injuries he allegedly sustained from a slip-and-fall incident in the beer aisle of a local Publix.

Attorneys representing Edward Wederman filed the lawsuit against Publix Super Markets, Inc. on February 7.

According to the complaint, Wederman visited a Publix in Marion County on July 9, 2024.

Although the address of the Publix in question is not identified in the complaint, property records show that Wederman lives close to two Publix grocery stores in southwest Ocala.

During his visit to Publix, Wederman allegedly slipped while he was in the “beer and wine” aisle “due to water on the floor.”

The complaint claims the water was either “leaking from the freezer” or was the result of “dropped ice or spilled water.”

The document goes on to claim that the grocery store was negligent in its maintenance of its facilities and was negligent in notifying its customers of the dangerous conditions.

“As a result [of Publix’s negligence], while Plaintiff was visiting Defendant’s premises, Plaintiff slipped due to water leaking from the cooler/freezer in the beer and wine aisle,” reads the complaint.

Wederman claims he suffered “bodily injury” resulting in “pain and suffering, disability, disfigurement, permanent and significant scarring, mental anguish,” and several other “permanent or continuing” losses as a result of the incident.

His attorneys are seeking more than $50,000 in damages, exclusive of “costs, interest, and attorneys’ fees.”

According to the case docket maintained by the Marion County Clerk of Courts, a summons was issued to Publix on February 11. According to Florida Statutes, Publix has 20 days to respond to the complaint.
