An Ocala man driving a dump truck caused a multi-hour shutdown on Interstate 75 and the Turnpike after he inadvertently left his truck bed raised and crashed into an overpass.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the 56-year-old Ocala man was driving northbound on I-75 at around 1:20 a.m. on Monday, March 17, when he crashed into the County Road 475 overpass on the highway, near mile marker 333.

Overpass Strike1
Florida Highway Patrol troopers blocked off the roadway to allow emergency personnel time to work at the scene of the dump truck bed, which was separated from the truck.

The driver mistakenly left his dump bed in a raised position, which allowed the bed to be sheared from the truck after the impact.

The truck continued without the bed and came to a final rest just north of the accident.

There were no injuries reported as a result of the incident and engineers from the Florida Department of Transportation were called to the scene to inspect the highway.

Overpass Strike2
The dump truck bed was separated from the truck.

The interstate was cleared at approximately 8:15 a.m., according to FHP.

The accident caused delays throughout the early morning hours in Sumter County.

In Marion County, motorists reported traffic jams along CR 475 and stretches of I-75 near Exit 341/CR 484.
