Marion County School Board members have chosen a new interim superintendent that will take over the position in July.

On Thursday, the board reached a consensus to appoint Dr. Danielle Brewer to the position. Brewer currently serves the district as the senior executive director of high schools and secondary curriculum.

According to a statement from Marion County Public Schools, Brewer emerged as the top candidate after earning the highest scores from individual interviews conducted by each member of the board.

Brewer holds degrees in criminal justice and educational leadership from Saint Leo University. She has an education specialist (Ed.S.) degree from National Louis University, where she also earned her Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in educational leadership.

Brewer began her career with MCPS as a teacher in 2005. Over the past twenty years, she served as an assistant principal and a principal, with her most recent stint coming at North Marion High School.

In 2021, Brewer was named director of curriculum, instruction, and digital learning, and in 2023, she was promoted to her current executive role.

Brewer was selected from several qualified candidates. She will take over the position from Dr. Diane Gullett, who announced her resignation last month. Gullett is leaving the position to become the Chief Academic Officer for the Bailey Education Group.

Now that Brewer has been selected, the MCSB Chair Lori Conrad will work with the board’s attorney to negotiate a contract. That agreement is expected to be formally approved at a special board meeting on April 29 at 5:30 p.m.

Brewer will begin working alongside Dr. Gullett during a transition period before she assumes the interim superintendent role on July 12.
