A Marion County man accused of breaking into a local residence and taking a nap on the victim’s couch is facing additional charges after methamphetamine and stolen tools were allegedly found in his possession.
On Tuesday, April 29, a Marion County Sheriff’s Office deputy arrived at the victim’s home located on NE 114th Avenue Road in Fort McCoy. The victim claimed that a man, later identified as 29-year-old Kurt Allen Bunnell II, had battered him inside the residence before fleeing from the area, according to the arrest report.
The deputy mentioned in the report that Bunnell was spotted in the area and detained in handcuffs. While speaking with the deputy, Bunnell claimed that he thought the incident location was “his brother’s house,” and he had “decided to take a nap” inside the home when he was woken up by the victim.
According to the report, the victim had arrived at the residence on Tuesday and observed that the gate was open. The victim recalled closing the gate the previous day when he was at the property.
The victim advised that the doors to the residence were “locked and secured.” Shortly after the victim unlocked the front door and entered the home, Bunnell was allegedly observed sleeping on a couch.
When the victim confronted Bunnell, he allegedly told the victim that he was sleeping inside the home because he thought it belonged to his brother. The victim proceeded to call 911.
Bunnell then pushed past the victim in the doorway, which caused his bicycle to “ram” into the victim’s leg while the victim was speaking with law enforcement, according to the report.
When the deputy arrived at the home, the victim advised that miscellaneous tools were missing from inside the home. The report stated that some of the missing items were found “bundled up” and “wrapped in duct tape.”
During an interview with law enforcement, Bunnell claimed that he had assumed his brother “still lived there,” and he had entered the home through an unlocked door. He recalled napping on the couch and being woken up by the victim, according to the report.
Bunnell further stated that due to the victim’s positioning inside the home, he had to push past the victim in order to exit the property. The report stated that Bunnell admitted to taking “some tools” from the home, which were found in a bag he was carrying, and a baggie containing methamphetamine was also allegedly found in his possession.
The total value of the stolen tools was estimated at around $300, according to the report.
Bunnell was arrested and transported to Marion County Jail, where he is currently being held without bond. He is facing the following charges: burglary with assault or battery, grand theft of a dwelling (over $100 but less than $300), possession of a controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
A court date for Bunnell has not been scheduled yet, according to jail records.
