An Ocala high school student and scout earned his rank as Eagle Scout, which is the highest scouting rank one can achieve, through a lasting community service project that honors Marion County’s veterans.
The county held a dedication ceremony for the redesigned Military Service Flag Display Plaza at the Marion County Veterans Park on May 17.
The plaza was the Eagle Scout project of Nicholas Eggers, a local student at Forest High School and member of Boy Scout Troop 72. Eggers raised tens of thousands of dollars from local businesses and individuals to lead a complete redesign of the plaza.
On May 17, after the ceremony for the plaza, Eggers earned his Eagle Scout designation from local officials.
Eagle Scout is the highest rank available through the Scouts BSA Program. The honor is bestowed upon scouts who have earned 21 merit badges, fulfilled leadership roles, demonstrated the Scout spirit, and have completed a service project.

Eggers, who has been a scout since the age of 12, wanted to use the display to give back to the community and “honor the brave men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces.”
“With the support of fellow Scouts, adult leaders, friends, family, and members of the community, what began as a simple idea became a reality. This project has shown me the impact of hard work, teamwork, and dedication, and I’m grateful for everyone who helped bring it to life,” reads a plaque dedicated to Eggers at the plaza.
