A 70-year-old Ocala passenger was killed and a driver was seriously injured on Thursday night after their vehicle was struck by a pickup truck that ran a red light on State Road 200.
The fatal accident occurred near the intersection of SR 200 and SW 103rd Street Road in Ocala on Thursday, July 17.
According to a report by the Florida Highway Patrol, a 70-year-old Ocala woman was driving a sedan westbound on SR 200 at around 7:24 p.m. As the vehicle approached SW 103rd Street Road, the woman entered the left turning lane in an attempt to turn onto SW 103rd.
While the sedan was turning, a pickup truck being driven eastbound on SR 200 by a 52-year-old Ocala man failed to stop at a steady red light at the intersection.
As a result, the front of the pickup truck collided with the passenger side of the sedan.
After the collision, the pickup truck came to final rest facing in an easterly direction on the southeast corner of the intersection. The sedan came to final rest facing a southerly direction on the same corner of the intersection as the pickup truck.
The passenger in the sedan, who was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash, suffered fatal injuries and was declared deceased at HCA Ocala Hospital at approximately 7:50 p.m.
The driver of the sedan, who was also wearing her seatbelt, suffered serious injuries. The man driving the pickup suffered minor injuries, according to the FHP report.
