To the Editor:
The Ocala Marion County Veterans Memorial Park is hallowed ground, dedicated to the men and women who wore the uniform and sacrificed for this country.
As a veteran—and someone whose name is etched in stone at that very park—I find it deeply appalling that [they] would choose to hold a memorial event there for someone who never served in the armed forces.
To hold a memorial for a civilian, regardless of their public image or legacy, is a disgrace to the purpose and integrity of that space.
I’m not writing to argue whether Mr. Kirk was a good man or not. It’s no secret everyone has an opinion about him. That’s not the point.
The issue is respect for what that park stands for. If [individuals] want to honor him, do it at WEC, Live Stock Pavilion, or any number of other suitable venues here locally. But leave the veterans park to the veterans.
Turning that park into a political battleground dishonors those of us who served—and those who never came home.
It’s offensive, tone-deaf, and completely inappropriate.
Do better.
Sincerely,
Franco Porcelli
