Marion Technical College will launch two new programs next week that offer local students hands-on experience with aircraft, aviation equipment, and diesel engines.

The college, which is located at 1014 SW 7th Road in Ocala, will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new diesel and aviation mechanics programs on Thursday, October 30.

Construction of the $5.57 million facility took approximately two years, with the school breaking ground in September 2023.

The new facility, which was funded by a special allocation earmarked during the 2023 Florida Legislative session, is on the southeast corner of the campus. It features 16,000 square feet of classroom and work space for both programs.

Buildings that will house aviation and diesel tech programs at Marion Technical College are nearly complete.

According to a statement issued by Marion County Public Schools (MCPS), the programs will train up to 100 dual-enrolled high school and adult students using specialized simulators and life-size aircraft, including a passenger jet and helicopter.

“Marion County is quickly advancing its reputation as a logistics and distribution hub and home to the Ocala International Airport. This expansion will help meet the demand for these careers, keeping graduates local to the Ocala/Marion County community,” reads the statement from MCPS.

According to the college’s website, the aviation airframe mechanics program consists of 1,350 hours of preparation for students for employment or advanced training in the commercial and general aviation industry. The instruction is designed to prepare students for Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) license examinations for Airframe ratings.

The 1,050-hour diesel systems technician 1 program trains students to become diesel mechanics/technicians through instruction on safety, engine repair, electrical systems, fuel injection, overhauls, and preventive maintenance.
