The Marion County Board of County Commissioners held a special ceremony on Friday to dedicate a portion of a local roadway as “Charlie Kirk Way,” installing a sign that cites the late activist’s “leadership, faith, and service.”
On Friday, the MCBCC and local residents gathered to dedicate a portion of County Road 475 (South Magnolia Avenue), between County Road 312 and SW 42nd Avenue, as Charlie Kirk Memorial Highway. The segment connects three local schools.
“Charlie Kirk dedicated his life to promoting faith, family, freedom, and civic engagement, inspiring millions to take part in shaping the future of their communities and nation. The county commission also reaffirmed its commitment to civility and condemned all forms of political violence and harassment,” reads a statement shared by the county.
The installation of the new sign comes two and a half weeks after the MCBCC voted to dedicate the portion of the roadway in Kirk’s name.
In addition to the roadway sign, the commission also voted that day to approve a day of remembrance for Kirk on October 14.
The roadway dedication in Ocala and Marion County follows a similar installation in Lake County.
Resolutions were passed to honor Kirk across the United States by the United States House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate on September 18.
Earlier this month, U.S. Senator Rick Scott proposed that a street in Washington D.C. be named in the late Kirk’s honor.
In Florida, a member of the state’s house of representatives proposed a bill that asks the state to withhold public funding from public institutions that do not rename a roadway after the late Kirk.
