An Ocala man is in custody after a high-speed, multi-agency chase that stretched across several counties on Interstate 75 last week ended when he lost control of his Jeep due to spike strips.
The pursuit began on Feb. 20, at around 12:50 p.m., when the Sarasota Police Department alerted the Florida Highway Patrol to a black Jeep Cherokee fleeing their jurisdiction. FHP troopers located the vehicle and initiated a chase as it sped northbound on I-75 through Marion County and into Alachua County.
Throughout the pursuit, the suspect traveled at speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour, weaving in and out of traffic and utilizing the shoulders of the roadway.
Troopers attempted several Precision Immobilization Technique maneuvers to stop the vehicle, but the driver successfully avoided them. As the chase moved north, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office and the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office joined the effort to disable the fleeing Jeep.
The pursuit reached its climax near mile marker 379 in Alachua County, where deputies successfully deployed spike strips that punctured the Jeep’s front right tire.
The 38-year-old driver, identified as John Reed of Ocala, lost control of the vehicle and collided with a guardrail near mile marker 380. Reed, who sustained minor injuries in the crash, was taken into custody by troopers and deputies at gunpoint following verbal commands.
Upon searching the vehicle, authorities allegedly discovered a significant cache of weapons and gear, including a rifle, a handgun, ammunition, magazines, and a plate carrier.
Reed was transported by Alachua County Fire Rescue to a hospital in Gainesville for evaluation before being booked into the Alachua County Detention Center. He is facing charges of fleeing and eluding as well as reckless driving.
