To the Editor:
As a student at Westport High School, I find the school’s safety standards crazy.
About 2 to 3 weeks ago, we were in code red for a bomb threat as the President of the country was actively flying and driving though our city, next to our school.
And it’s not even the first threat received to our Marion County schools. Ironically enough, a few weeks late we had a gun scare.
How many threats are going to be called until change happens or for our school’s safety to be taken seriously? Is it going to take a real incident for that to happen? When will change from those who can do things about it, like our government, who is just driving through our city freely while we were stuck confused and scared in our classrooms, going to do something about it?
We’re so accustomed to dealing with these abnormal school happenings to the point where even students aren’t fazed by them anymore. That shouldn’t be normalized.
I talked to some students after the second code red at our school and asked them if they were feeling alright and their response was, and I quote, ‘Yeah, I’m used to it by now lol.’
This is not normal and shouldn’t be a constant occurrence.
