Hundreds of local residents were on hand for the opening of the new animal shelter in Ocala.

The $22 million project, which broke ground in October 2024, represents a massive expansion over the county’s heavily constrained, two-acre facility on SE 66th Street. The new shelter is designed to provide compassionate care, enrichment, and expanded space for pets in need for generations to come.

The front entrance of the new building greets visitors with a striking blue facade featuring the county seal and the slogan, “For the love of people & pets.” Inside, the facility boasts a bright, welcoming lobby adorned with large, colorful portraits of dogs and cats.

Highlighting its expansive footprint, the complex sits on a 20-acre parcel and features 37,361 square feet of total building space, nearly doubling the 21,000 square feet of the previous shelter.

The upgraded facility includes 18,036 square feet of modernized, air-conditioned kennel space divided across multiple 4,509-square-foot kennel buildings. Each individual animal enclosure provides 64 square feet of total space, split evenly between a 32-square-foot interior and a 32-square-foot exterior.

In addition to the enhanced living quarters, the facility’s medical capabilities have seen major upgrades. The on-site clinical area has been drastically expanded from a mere 144 square feet at the old facility to 2,017 square feet at the new center.

The state-of-the-art operating and intake rooms are equipped with multiple surgical tables, overhead surgical lighting, modern cabinetry, and modernized sanitation features.

To easily accommodate the influx of visitors, volunteers, and staff members, the campus also features 99 parking spots.

Getting the shelter to the finish line was a multi-year journey for the county. Before selecting the Highway 40 property as a scalable, long-term solution, officials explored other options, including a 137-acre farm in Citra that was ultimately abandoned due to community opposition.

Though the project was originally slated to open in December 2025, county leaders extended the construction timeline into this spring to incorporate several key design enhancements.

With the ribbon officially cut, the new shelter is fully open for business. County officials are encouraging the community to stop by the new campus to check out the upgrades and potentially foster or adopt a new furry friend.
