Facing ongoing contamination challenges and rising operational expenses, Ocala officials have decided to permanently end curbside recycling collection this July and transition to a citywide drop-off model.

Beginning Monday, July 6, the City of Ocala will officially transition from curbside recycling collection to a citywide drop-off recycling program. The policy shift is designed to maintain recycling access for residents while helping contain rising residential sanitation costs, according to a statement issued by city officials.

The transition follows approval from the Ocala City Council on Feb. 3 as part of a broader effort to manage increasing operational expenses. By eliminating the curbside recycling program, the city believes it will be able to offset costs that would have otherwise added approximately $4.96 per month to local residential sanitation rates.

In addition to rising expenses, officials noted that the single-stream curbside recycling model has faced ongoing contamination challenges caused by residents placing non-recyclable materials into the recycling carts.

This contamination increases processing costs and reduces operational efficiency, making the curbside program increasingly difficult to sustain in a cost-effective manner, according to the city.

To balance service delivery with long-term fiscal responsibility, residents who wish to continue recycling will be able to utilize eight designated city drop-off locations starting July 6:

  • Mary Sue Rich Community Center
  • Croskey Center / Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Complex
  • Ocala Regional Sportsplex
  • Polly Palmer Park
  • West of Fire Station No. 5 (on NE 24th Street)
  • NE Eighth Avenue and NE 14th Street
  • Jervey Gantt Park
  • SE 31st Street and SE Fifth Terrace

Residents currently participating in the curbside program do not need to take any immediate action. On July 6, existing recycling carts will automatically convert to standard garbage carts unless a resident explicitly requests that the cart be removed.

Because city code allows a maximum of two garbage carts per household, residents who already possess two garbage carts in addition to a recycling cart will have their recycling cart automatically removed by the city with no action required.
