A 58-year-old Ocala man was arrested early Tuesday morning after he allegedly smashed multiple windows at a local ALDI.
On Tuesday, June 9, a Marion County Sheriff’s Office deputy responded to the Aldi located at 184 Marion Oaks Boulevard in reference to a broken window alarm that was triggered at around 1:55 a.m., according to the arrest report.
Upon arrival, the deputy observed a man, identified as Steven Colon, who was riding a bicycle in the parking lot. When initially questioned, Colon reportedly claimed he was in front of ALDI when he heard a sound resembling “an explosion,” which was followed by the windows shattering.
Colon denied damaging the windows, according to the report.
The deputy inspected the storefront and observed three separate windows that had “circle-like holes.” The report mentioned that it appeared as though a “sphere-shaped object” had been thrown at the windows.
In addition, the deputy reportedly spotted blood on the damaged glass where the holes were located. Colon allegedly admitted that the blood belonged to him, stating that a cut on his wrist “came from the window.”
Colon was detained, and a pat-down search was conducted. During a search of his backpack and pockets, a plastic bottle and cut-up pen were found, and the deputy noted that both items appeared to have been “used as a pipe.”
The deputy also reportedly found two “blunts” in Colon’s possession, which field-tested positive for the presence of marijuana. The makeshift pipes also later tested positive for methamphetamine and marijuana, according to the report.
After being advised of his Miranda rights, Colon allegedly claimed that other individuals had started throwing rocks at him, which caused him to crash his bicycle into the window.
An ALDI employee provided the deputy with video surveillance footage, which reportedly showed Colon riding his bicycle around the empty parking lot for roughly 40 minutes before getting off the bike and approaching the windows.
Moments later, while Colon was out of view of the surveillance cameras, the store’s alarm was triggered. Colon then reportedly returned within the camera’s view and emptied a nearby trash can before throwing its lid at one of the windows “in a very aggressive manner.”
In the report, the deputy stated that the surveillance footage did not show anyone else near the window, nor did it show anyone throwing rocks at Colon.
ALDI management estimated that it would cost approximately $6,000 to fix the shattered windows.
Colon was placed under arrest and transported to Marion County Jail, where he remains in custody. His bond has been set at $3,500, and he is facing the following charges: criminal mischief with property damage over $1,000 and possession of drug paraphernalia.
A court date for Colon has not yet been scheduled, according to jail records.
The ALDI at 184 Marion Oaks Boulevard in Ocala celebrated its grand opening in June 2025, replacing a former Winn-Dixie grocery store.
