Facing ongoing contamination challenges and rising operational expenses, Ocala has officially ended curbside recycling collection in favor of a new, citywide drop-off model.

The policy shift went into effect on Monday, July 6. The transition follows approval from the Ocala City Council earlier this year as part of a broader effort to manage increasing operational expenses.

By eliminating the curbside recycling program, the city believes it will be able to offset costs that would have otherwise added approximately $4.96 per month to local residential sanitation rates.

In addition to rising expenses, officials previously noted that the single-stream curbside recycling model faced ongoing contamination challenges caused by residents placing non-recyclable materials into the recycling carts. This contamination increased processing costs and reduced operational efficiency, making the curbside program increasingly difficult to sustain in a cost-effective manner, according to city officials.

Residents currently participating in the curbside program do not need to take any immediate action. Starting today, existing recycling carts will automatically convert to standard garbage carts unless a resident explicitly requests that the cart be removed.

Because city code allows a maximum of two garbage carts per household, residents who already possess two garbage carts in addition to a recycling cart will have their recycling cart automatically removed by the city with no action required.

To balance service delivery with long-term fiscal responsibility, residents who wish to continue recycling will now be able to utilize eight designated city drop-off locations. Over the past month, the city took procedural steps to establish public uses on several municipal-owned properties to accommodate the new network.

The eight drop-off sites are located at the Mary Sue Rich Community Center, the Croskey Center at the Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Complex, the Ocala Regional Sportsplex, Polly Palmer Park, Jervey Gantt Park, and west of Fire Station No. 5 on NE 24th Street.

Two additional drop-off zones have been established at local intersections. A 0.75-acre parcel located at the intersection of NE Eighth Avenue and NE 14th Street will serve the city’s central core and portions of northeast Ocala.

Furthermore, a 0.21-acre parcel located at the intersection of SE 31st Street and SE Fifth Terrace, which the city originally acquired in 2010, will serve as a drop-off zone in southeast Ocala.
