Roaches force closure of food-serving area at Ocala movie complex

The food and beverage area at an Ocala movie complex was temporarily shut down last week after a health inspector found roaches in the facility.

The kitchen at Regal Cinemas Hollywood 16 & IMAX, located at 2801 SW 27th Ave., was forced to close last Thursday after the inspector cited an issue with live roaches.

The report cited roaches on a wall above a triple sink and a soda rack in the kitchen, as well as one with an egg attached. Roach droppings also were found on the wall over the triple sink and around a yellow hazard book on a shelf, according to an inspector’s report on file with the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation.

The July 26 report also cited two intermediate-level violations. One consisted of an accumulation of a black/green mold-like substance in the interior of an ice machine located in the concession area in the back of the theater. And the other cited no date marking on an open package of hot dogs in a reach-in cooler.

The inspector also noted an issue with ceiling tiles that were damaged or in disrepair. The report says that several were peeling throughout the kitchen area.
The inspector returned the following day and again found two live roaches, one in the kitchen area and another on a wheel of a table in a backroom. The report also cited roach excrement on the wheel of the table and dead roaches on the floor in the back prep area of the kitchen.

After those issues were taken care of, the facility was allowed to reopen. But the staff was told to continue repairing or replacing the damaged ceiling tiles for a follow-up inspection.
