Marion County crash leaves 54-year-old Michigan man dead

A Michigan man was killed Saturday afternoon in a crash at the intersection of U.S. Hwy. 27 and County Road 464B in Marion County.

The identity of the 54-year-old man, of Dexter, Mich., hasn’t been released pending notification of next of kin, a Florida Highway Patrol report states.

The crash occurred at 2:45 p.m. when the Michigan man was traveling north on CR 464B in a white 2004 Toyota Corolla. After coming to a stop at the intersection of U.S. Hwy. 27, the Toyota traveled north into the paved median of the highway, then into the path of an oncoming white 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe driven by 41-year-old Penny Heatley, of Morriston.

Heatley’s SUV collided with the Toyota, causing it to overturn and end up resting on the driver’s side in a ditch on the north shoulder of U.S. Hwy. 27. Heatley’s vehicle rotated in a clockwise direction and came to rest in the outside lane of U.S. Hwy. 27 facing northeast, the FHP report says.

The Michigan man was transported to Ocala Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Heatley also was transported to the same hospital suffering from minor injuries.

The crash still is under investigation and it hasn’t been determined if alcohol was a factor, the FHP report says, adding that possible charges are pending.
