The relative of a missing Lake Tropicana couple who was being sought by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office has been located in another state.
Allyn Shane Gilbert, 53, was arrested in Omaha, Neb., this past Friday and is being held in Douglas County on a Marion County warrant for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Gilbert was being sought after human remains were found at the home of 75-year old Layton Underwood and his wife, 69-year old Donna, at 18760 SW 47 Street in Dunnellon. The identity of the remains, which were confirmed to be human, haven’t yet been identified. But the Underwoods are considered as Missing Endangered by the sheriff’s office.
On Sunday, Jan. 6, sheriff’s deputies received a phone call from a family member requesting a well-being check on the Underwoods. The caller could not make contact with the couple and requested assistance. But when deputies arrived at the Underwood residence, the couple was not there.
During the investigation, deputies found human remains on the property and they immediately requested additional crime scene assistance. Major Crimes detectives, forensic technicians, the Medical Examiner and personnel from the University of Florida C.A. Pound Lab responded and conducted an in-depth investigation on the property. They are now in the process of identifying the remains.
Gilbert, who also had been missing as Missing Endangered, was in possession of the Underwood’s white 2014 Volkswagen Passat S. Marion County sheriff’s Major Crimes detectives traveled to Omaha over the weekend and will be speaking with Gilbert, who is being held in the Douglas County Jail.
