Recently released man jailed on drug charges during traffic stop

Charles Louis Munford III

An Ocala man who recently spent more than a month in jail on drug charges was arrested again early Sunday after MDMA was found in is vehicle during a traffic stop.

Charles Louis Munford III, 30, was charged with possession of MDMA, possession of marijuana, and driving with a suspended license after the stop, which happened around 1 a.m. on SE 24th Street near SE 36th Avenue.

Munford was in the Marion County Jail from June 8 to July 20 on charges of possession of fentanyl, heroin, methamphetamine, and marijuana, according to jail records.

An Ocala police officer ran the tag number of a blue 2005 Hyundai and learned that the registered owner had a suspended license. Munford is not the registered owner of the vehicle, but a search of the Driver and Vehicle Information Database (DAVID) revealed his license was suspended in March for failure to meet financial responsibilities, according to the OPD report.

A K9 officer responded to the scene and his dog gave a positive reaction during an open-air sniff around the vehicle. Upon searching the vehicle, the officer saw Munford’s gold credit card sitting on top of the cup holders in the center console. Beneath it was a small plastic bag containing a clear/brownish powdered substance and a brown rolled cigarette paper in the cup holder, the report said.

Upon breaking open the cigarette wrapper, it was found to contain more of the powdered substance that was in the bag. The powder in the wrapper and powder in the bag both tested positive for MDMA, according to the report.

Munford, who refused to be interviewed by the officer, was taken to the Marion County Jail, where he remained held Tuesday on $4,000 bond. He’s scheduled to appear in Marion County Court on Oct. 15.
