Frantic man pulls off car door handles to keep woman from driving away

Jeffrey Michael Stalnaker

A 52-year-old Ocala man was arrested Thursday after he admitted to ripping off two door handles and smashing a window while trying to stop a woman from pulling out of a driveway.

The victim told a Marion County sheriff’s deputy that she and Jeffrey Michael Stalnaker had been arguing all day and she was trying to leave the location with her son. She said while she was backing out of the driveway, Stalnaker started beating on the passenger side front window and pulling on the door handle, according to the sheriff’s office report.

The victim said Stalnaker eventually pulled off the door handle and made his way to the front of the vehicle, where he continued to yell at the victim and told her she would have to run him over to leave. The victim’s daughter arrived at the location and was helping her leave when Stalnaker approached the driver’s side of the vehicle and ripped off that door handle, the report said.

The victim said she rolled down the window partially to talk to Stalnaker, allowing him to grab the top of the window. He then pulled the top of the window, shattering it. Stalnaker reached into the vehicle, grabbed the victim’s left arm and pulled it against the window, causing a laceration to her wrist. He continued to reach into the vehicle, trying to take the keys so the victim couldn’t leave, according to the report.

Stalnaker admitted to the deputy that he broke the door handles and window. He said he was trying to take the keys but denied ever touching the victim. He was charged with simple domestic battery and taken to the Marion County Jail, where he was released Friday on $1,000 bond. He’ll appear in Marion County Court on Jan. 13.
