Often-arrested Ocala man accused of battering his jealous wife

Kina Kewan Mathis

An Ocala man who’s been arrested more than 20 times spent a night in jail for allegedly battering his wife after she recently confronted him outside another woman’s apartment.

Kina Kewan Mathis, 42, was charged with simple domestic battery. Marion County Jail records show Williams with 22 prior arrests since 1996, mostly for DUI and drug offenses.

The victim contacted Ocala Police shortly before 6 a.m. and said she was being pursued in her vehicle by Mathis, who was driving a black Buick with gold rims. She said she was driving eastbound on NE 14th Street and Mathis was still behind her. An officer going westbound on NE 14th Street saw the Buick pass in the other direction, but lost sight of the vehicle while turning around, according to the OPD report.

At that point, the victim informed police dispatch that she was no longer being followed. She met the officer in the parking lot of the Wawa at 3601 E. Silver Springs Blvd., the report said.

The victim said she found Mathis hanging out with another woman at the Laurel Park Apartments, 100 NW 23rd Ave. She said she confronted him about why he was at another woman’s apartment and they got into an argument. The victim said Mathis told her, “Since you want to randomly check on me, I’m going to hit you just like I hit her,” according to the report.

The victim said Mathis punched her twice. She said she got into her vehicle and left the complex, and Mathis got into his vehicle and started chasing her. The victim said there were no witnesses due to the fact they were alone in the parking lot, the report said.

The officer observed a minor cut on the victim’s shoulder and escorted her back to her residence. Upon arrival, the officer saw a black Buick with gold rims outside the residence and two men standing next to the vehicle. When asked, Mathis identified himself, according to the report.

When asked what happened, Mathis said the victim showed up at the apartment complex and questioned him about why he was with another woman. He said a verbal argument ensued and the victim got into her vehicle and drove away. Mathis said nothing physical took place and it was only a verbal argument. He said he and the victim have been married about eight years, the report said.

Mathis was released from jail Feb. 23 on $500 bond. He’s due to appear in Marion County Court on March 20.
