Two new COVID-19 cases among 281 identified throughout Marion County

Two more cases of the potentially deadly COVID-19 virus have been reported in Ocala and Summerfield – bringing the total to 281 in Marion County.

The latest patients were identified as a 43-year-old woman from Ocala and a 57-year-old woman from Summerfield. Both had been exposed to other COVID-19 patients but neither had traveled recently, according to the Florida Department of Health.

Marion County’s cases are divided among 119 men, 157 women and five non-residents. There have been eight deaths and 41 people have been seen in area hospitals.

The overwhelming majority of Marion County cases – 201 – have been reported in Ocala. Others have been identified in Summerfield (30), Dunnellon (13), Citra (10), Belleview (9), Ocklawaha (4), Anthony (3), Reddick (2), Silver Springs (2), Fort McCoy (1) and The Villages (1).

So far, 17,008 COVID-19 tests have been given in Marion County. Of those, 16,722 were negative. Those who tested positive for the virus range in age from 6 months to 97 years old, with the average age being 49. Marion County’s positive test rate is 1.7 percent, compared with an overall rate in Florida of 5.3 percent.

As of Monday, the tri-county area was reporting 879 COVID-19 cases – an increase of 10 from Sunday to Monday. Those are divided among 457 men, 401 women and 21 non-residents. There have been 40 deaths and 166 people have been hospitalized.

Sumter County continues to hold steady at 261 cases, with the last positive result being reported this past Friday. Those cases are divided among 184 men, 76 women and one non-resident. There have been 17 deaths and 45 people have been required some form of hospital care.

Of the Sumter County cases, 68 have been reported in The Villages, with another 17 in Oxford and nine in Wildwood. Another 122 cases have been identified in Bushnell, with all but one of those at the Sumter Correctional Institution (105 inmates and 16 staff members). Other cases also have been identified in Lake Panasoffkee (22), Webster (8), Lady Lake portion of the county (6), Sumterville (5) and Coleman (3). The federal prison in Coleman also has identified six cases among four staff members and two inmates.
Lake County reported the biggest increase on Monday, adding eight new cases among 154 men, 168 women and 15 non-residents. There have been 15 deaths and 80 people have been hospitalized.

Nine of the Lake County cases are in The Villages, with 17 also identified in Lady Lake and six in Fruitland Park. Other Lake County cases have been reported in Clermont (102), Leesburg (48), Eustis (34), Tavares (22), Mount Dora (23), Groveland (19), Mascotte (14), Minneola (8), Sorrento (5), Montverde (4), Howey-in-the-Hills (3), Altoona (2), Okahumpka (1), Umatilla (1), Grand Island (1), Paisley (1) and Yalaha (1).

All told, Florida is reporting 64,904 COVID-19 cases – an increase of 966 in a 24-hour period. Of those, 63,378 are residents. There have been 2,712 deaths and 11,008 people have been hospitalized across the Sunshine State.
