Marion County’s COVID-19 cases increased to 292 on Thursday as the tri-county area and Florida saw an increase in new cases.
The tri-county area reported 912 COVID-19 cases Thursday – an increase of 19 in a 24-hour period. That marks the biggest single-day increase since Gov. Ron DeSantis announced June 3 that Florida was entering the second phase of his reopening plan.
Those tri-county cases are divided among 472 men, 418 women and 22 non-residents. There have been 40 deaths and 171 people have been hospitalized.
Marion County’s cases are divided among 123 men, 164 women and five non-residents. There have been eight deaths and 43 people have been hospitalized.
The latest patients in Marion County have been identified as:
- 62-year-old Summerfield female with no travel history who had been in contact with another patient;
- 66-year-old Summerfield male with no travel history who had been in contact with another patient;
- 65-year-old Summerfield male with an unknown travel history;
- 28-year-old Ocala female with an unknown travel history; and
- 30-year-old Ocala female with no travel history.
The overwhelming majority of Marion County cases – 206 – have been identified in Ocala, with another 32 in Summerfield. Others have been reported in Dunnellon (14), Citra (10), Belleview (9), Ocklawaha (4), Anthony (3), Reddick (2), Silver Springs (2), The Villages (2) and Fort McCoy (1).
Lake County is reporting 355 cases among 162 men, 178 women and 15 non-residents. There have been 15 deaths and 83 people have required some form of hospital care.
Clermont leads the way in Lake County with 109 cases. Others also have been identified in Leesburg (48), Eustis (40), Tavares (23), Mount Dora (22), Groveland (20), Lady Lake (18), Mascotte (14), The Villages (10), Minneola (8), Fruitland Park (6), Sorrento (6), Montverde (4), Howey-in-the-Hills (3), Altoona (2), Okahumpka (1), Umatilla (3), Grand Island (1), Paisley (1) and Yalaha (1).
Sumter County held steady Thursday at 265 cases among 187 men, 76 women and 22 non-residents. There have been 17 deaths and 45 people have required some form of hospital care.
Sixty-nine of the Sumter County cases are in The Villages, with another 122 reported in Bushnell. But all but one of those cases have been reported at the Sumter Correctional Institution (105 inmates and 16 staff members).
Other Sumter County cases have been identified in Lake Panasoffkee (22), Oxford (19), Wildwood (9), Webster (8), Lady Lake portion of the county (6), Sumterville (5) and Coleman (3). The federal prison in Coleman also has identified six cases among four staff members and two inmates.
All told, Florida is reporting 69,069 COVID-19 cases – an increase of 1,698 in a 24-hour period. Of those, 65,779 are residents. There have been 2,848 deaths and 11,571 people have been hospitalized across the Sunshine State.
