Belleview man accused of strangling woman on side of road

Jermaine Major Loynes

A Belleview man was arrested last week for allegedly battering and strangling a woman on the side of a road.

Jermaine Major Loynes, 37, of SE 111th Street, was charged with simple battery and domestic battery by strangulation after the incident, which started Wednesday night when he walked away from the victim at an unknown gas station in The Villages during an argument over his drug addiction. The victim said he had mixed unprescribed pain pills with alcohol.

The victim told a Marion County sheriff’s deputy it is not unusual for Loynes to walk off, and he threatens to harm her if she doesn’t find him and pick him up. She said she found him near the Market of Marion, in the 12800 block of U.S. Highway 441 in Belleview, according to the sheriff’s office report.

The victim said she tried to pick up Loynes three different times. The first time, he refused and spit in her face. The second time, he told her to beg for her life and she refused, so he walked away. The victim said the third time she tried to pick him up, she got out of the truck and Loynes grabbed her by the hair and dragged her along the side of the road, the report said.

The victim said she rolled onto her back and Loynes pinned her down with his forearm against her threat so she couldn’t breathe. Loynes said while pinning the victim down, “If I made it home before you, I was going to take an axe to your head. You have to pay for every step I took,” according to the report.

The victim said she was able to get up at one point and tried to run to the truck, but Loynes grabbed her left arm and shirt, pulling her back towards him. She said she managed to get free from his grip and call 911, the report said.

The deputy observed a superficial cut on the back of the victim’s neck, a red mark around her wrist and a red mark on the back of the victim’s tricep. The victim appeared to be dirty and her shirt was stretched out, according to the report.

Interviewed at his residence, Loynes told the deputy he only had a verbal altercation with the victim and refused to get into the car with her. He said he did not have a physical altercation with the victim, the report said.

Loynes was still being held Monday in the Marion County Jail on $10,000 bond. He will appear in Marion County Court on Aug. 25.
