Ocala man popped for DUI after passing out at red light

Jose Luis Solis

An Ocala man was charged with DUI after falling asleep behind the wheel of his vehicle while stopped at a traffic light in Silver Springs.

A Marion County sheriff’s deputy responded to the intersection of East Silver Springs Boulevard and NE 55th Avenue at around 4 a.m. Sunday after receiving a report that the driver of a Kia Soul had been stopped at the light for about 10 minutes. The caller said it appeared the driver was asleep at the wheel, according to the sheriff’s office report.

Upon arrival, the deputy parked in front of the vehicle and activated his overhead lights, which awakened the driver – Jose Luis Solis, 20, of 3001 SE Lake Weir Ave. #603. Solis put the vehicle in reverse and started to back up, but he complied with the deputy’s order to stop the vehicle, the report said.

The deputy smelled the odor of alcohol on Solis’ breath and observed his eyes were bloodshot and watery. Asked how much he had to drink, Solis said, “not much.” After failing a series of field sobriety tests, he was administered a breath test, which provided readings of .129 and .121, according to the report.

A search of Solis vehicle turned up a glass pipe with marijuana residue and a blue grinder with a green leafy substance. Solis does have a valid medical marijuana card, the report said.

Solis was taken to the Marion County Jail, were he was released later in the day on $1,000 bond.
