Ocala Electric Utility warns customers about bill payment scam

Ocala Electric Utility is warning its customers about a bill payment scam that starts with a telephone call.

Area residents and businesses have reported receiving calls that claim their electric service will be turned off within 30 minutes unless immediate payment is made over the phone. OEU will never call its customers demanding payment by prepaid card, credit card or debit card. If customers believe there is a problem with their account, they are encouraged to call (352) 629-2489.

OEU is taking steps to notify customers. Automated calls were sent to non-residential customers on Feb. 8. Automated calls to residential customers started Feb. 9 and continued for several days.

OEU is encouraging its customers to increase their awareness about payment scams in general. Customers should always be on the lookout for red flags and know what to do:

  • Be suspicious of callers who demand immediate payment for any reason;
  • Never give out personal or financial information to anyone who calls or emails you; and
  • Never wire money or provide debit or credit card numbers to someone you do not know.

For questions concerning this bill payment scam, call (352) 629-2489.
