Weirsdale man jailed after tussle with friend over calling woman derogatory name

Rocky Dale Swearingen

A Weirsdale man was arrested recently after another man scolded him for calling someone who wouldn’t give him $50 a derogatory name.

Marion County sheriff’s deputies were called to Weirsdale Park, located at 16286 S.E. 137th Court, in reference to a well-being check. When they arrived, they spoke with 20-year-old Rocky Dale Swearingen, who claimed the victim had slapped him on his ear, a sheriff’s office report states.

Deputies to responded to another unnamed location in Weirsdale and spoke with the victim, who confirmed there was a disagreement. He said Swearingen asked someone else for $50 and called her a “bitch” when she said she could only give him $10. He also told deputies that he told Swearingen not to speak to the woman that way, the report says.

The victim said Swearingen came at him with a closed fist, putting him in fear that he was going to be struck. He said he pushed Swearingen away in self-defense and Swearingen later punched him in the upper torso a couple of times, the report says.

Swearingen was placed under arrest and transported to the Marion County Jail, where he was charged with battery. He was released a day later on his own recognizance and is due in court April 14 at 1 p.m. to answer to the charge, jail records show.
