7 more local COVID-19 deaths as virus continues to slam Ocala and Marion County

Seven more tri-county residents have succumbed to COVID-19 as new cases of the deadly virus continue to be identified in Ocala and other communities in Marion County.

Five of the latest local fatalities were in Lake County and the other one was a resident of Marion County. They are among the 1,782 victims of the deadly virus in the tri-county area, the 34,072 in Florida and the 551,747 across the country.

All told, Florida is reporting 2,057,735 COVID-19 cases – an increase of 5,294 from Tuesday to Wednesday. Of those, 2,019,500 are residents. A total of 82,991 COVID-19 cases have been reported in long-term care centers and 31,597 in correctional facilities. Across the state, there have been 34,072 deaths and 85,197 people have been hospitalized.

Locally, Marion County is reporting 29,044 COVID-19 cases – an increase of 48 in a 24-hour period. There have been 919 deaths and 1,972 people have been hospitalized.

Ocala continues to lead Marion County with 21,268 cases – an overnight increase of 33. That represents 73.2 percent of all of the cases reported in Marion County. Others have been identified in Summerfield (1,813), Dunnellon (1,328), Belleview (1,267), Silver Springs (622), Citra (482), Ocklawaha (476), Reddick (302), Fort McCoy (298), Anthony (275), Weirsdale (228), The Villages (182), Salt Springs (49), Flemington (34), McIntosh (30), Orange Lake (24), Sparr (22), Lowell (19), Candler (19), East Lake (11), Fairfield (8) and Orange Springs (8).

TRI-COUNTY AREA

  • Cases: 64,513 – increase of 133
  • Deaths: 1,782
  • Hospitalizations: 3,945

LAKE COUNTY

  • Cases: 26,679 – increase of 75
  • Deaths: 606
  • Hospitalizations: 1,418
  • Vaccinations: 119,118 (69,903 both doses)
  • Cities with most cases: Clermont (7,007), Leesburg (4,057), Eustis (2,357), Mount Dora (1,989) and Tavares (1,892).

SUMTER COUNTY

  • Cases: 8,790 – increase of 10
  • Deaths: 257
  • Hospitalizations: 555
  • Vaccinations: 74,258 (50,872 both doses)
  • Areas/cities with most cases: The Villages (4,133), Wildwood (1,012), Bushnell (945), Coleman (841) and Oxford (503).
