Marion County Community Cleanup crew hosting next session in Silver Springs Shores

The Marion County Cleanup crew will host its next cleanup in Silver Springs Shores this weekend.

The group, which held its first event in June, will meet this Saturday, July 10, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Although the cleanup had originally been scheduled for July 3, it had to be postponed on account of thunderstorms in the area.

In recent weeks, the Marion County government and sheriff’s office have placed a renewed focus on littering and illegal dumping.

The county has created a new Litter Task Force to educate and clean the community.

Last month, the groups collaborated on a video threatening jail time for anyone caught illegally dumping.

The actions come in light of hundreds of thousands of pounds of litter collected across Marion County in recent months. Along with her fellow board members, Marion County Commissioner Michelle Stone labeled the amount of litter around Ocala and Marion County “disgusting” and urged residents to have more respect for their community.
