A 35-year-old Ocala man was arrested on a driving under the influence charge after allegedly crashing into a pole and blaming the accident on a woman he says fled the scene.

The Ocala Police Department responded to a call about an SUV crashing into a light pole in the 2900 block of SW 27th Avenue around midnight on July 25.

A witness on the scene says she saw an SUV driving at a high rate of speed southbound on SW 19th Avenue Road. The witness says the SUV almost struck another vehicle on the roadway and appeared to have hit a curb, according to the incident report.

The witness says that the SUV tried to make a left turn onto SW 27th Avenue to travel southbound, but turned too widely and crashed into a pole. The witness, along with multiple other witnesses, approached the vehicle to check on the occupant, 35-year-old Calvin Jenard Williams. ‘

Williams admitted he had been drinking at the Applebees located at 2615 SW 19th Avenue Road before an “unknown white female” offered to give him a ride home, according to the report. Williams says the woman was responsible for crashing the vehicle, and that she “exited the vehicle and fled northeast along SW 19th Avenue Road,” according to the report.

Witnesses claim Williams was the only person in the vehicle and when emergency personnel arrived on the scene, Williams was seated in the driver seat of the vehicle, according to the report.

Williams was arrested after he refused to perform a field sobriety test. He registered a blood alcohol content level of .205 after he was transported to the Marion County jail.

Williams posted bond and hast a court date set for August 2.
