Marion County health officials report decrease in positive COVID-19 cases, vaccinations during last week

Marion County health officials reported another decrease in the number of positive cases of COVID-19 and vaccinations during the last week.

The new weekly COVID-19 report produced by the Florida Department of Health shows that during the week from September 10 to September 16, Marion County reported 1,543 new cases of COVID-19.

That represents an average of just over 220 new positive COVID-19 cases each day.

Just three weeks ago, the county reported more than twice as many new cases.

Earlier this summer, the county peaked at an average of over 450 new cases a day. At the time, thousands of residents were being vaccinated each week.

This past week, however, the number of vaccinations administered decreased in comparison. According to the report, around 1,636 residents were vaccinated during the week.

In total, around 200,703 of the county’s 372,469 eligible residents have been vaccinated. That represents about 61% of the eligible population (i.e., residents ages 12 and older).

On Monday, a weekly COVID-19 report showed that Marion County Public Schools experienced a decrease in positive COVID-19 cases and quarantines last week.
