Marion County reports just over 3,950 new COVID-19 cases, 500 vaccinations this past week

Marion County saw just over 3,950 new positive COVID-19 cases and 500 vaccinations in the past week.

The updated statistics were released as part of the Florida Department of Health weekly COVID-19 situation report for Friday, January 21 to Thursday, January 27.

During the week, the county averaged 565 new positive COVID-19 cases each day. The previous week (January 14 to January 20) saw an average of just under 671 new cases each day.

“We are cautiously optimistic that this latest variant has peaked, as shown by the decline in new cases,” said Florida Department of Health in Marion County Administrator Mark Lander.

Vaccines were administered to 510 residents, a decrease of 134 from the previous week. The report shows that 63% of eligible residents, or 222,410, are currently vaccinated in Marion County. All residents ages 5 and older are considered eligible.

“The transmission rate remains very high, and the decline in vaccinations is a cause for concern. We maintain our emphasis on protective measures, such as frequent hand-washing, staying home if you are sick, and considering getting a COVID-19 vaccine if you have not gotten one, or getting a booster, if eligible. Vaccines remain the most effective tool to prevent serious illness or hospitalization from COVID-19,” said Lander.
