Local 7-year-old boy needs votes to win national mullet competition

A 7-year-old boy from Citrus County is competing in a national competition for the title of “Best Mullet,” and he needs help from the local community to reach the final round.

Matthew Skorupski has been growing his hair out for the past two years in preparation of the 2023 USA Mullet Championships, which kicked off on July 12. He is competing in the kid’s category (ages 5 to 8), and he has traveled with his mother, Amy Olivo, to different stores to hand out fliers in an effort to gain votes.

Skorupski’s efforts recently paid off as he earned enough votes to qualify for the second round of the competition. Voting is currently open for round two, and votes can be cast for multiple contestants once every 24 hours through Monday, July 24.

According to the USA Mullet Championships website, the contest has a weighted voting system that takes into account fan voting, fundraising, and judging, and each carries a weight that is combined into a total score for the individual contestants.

During the competition, donations can be made on behalf of the contestants, with the funds fully benefiting Jared Allen’s Homes for Wounded Warriors. The nonprofit organization is dedicated to providing critically injured United States military veterans with injury-specific, accessible, and mortgage-free homes.

The amount of money raised for charity on behalf of each contestant will contribute to their overall score in the competition.

To cast a vote for Skorupski, or to make a donation on his behalf, visit Matthew Skorupski’s “My Mullet Mane” competition webpage.

A panel of judges will determine the winner of the competition during the third and final round. The judges will critique each mullet based on length, style, uniqueness, and showmanship, and the best mullet from each category will receive a cash prize, an exclusive USA Mullet Championships trophy, and bragging rights.
