Fire Prevention Week may have come to an end, but Ocala Fire Rescue is reminding homeowners that its Smoke Alarms For Escape (SAFE) program is available year-round.
According to the City of Ocala, a home fire impacts a family in the United States every 85 seconds, and approximately 80% of home fire deaths in the country occur in homes without working smoke alarms.
“The simple act of having a working smoke alarm in the home can double a family’s chance of surviving a fire,” states the city on its website.
Through its SAFE program, Ocala Fire Rescue offers free smoke alarms and installation to any homeowner residing within the city limits.
Residents may request a smoke alarm by filling out an online form or by visiting Ocala Fire Rescue’s administrative office (505 NW Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue in Ocala) on Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
