Marion deputy shoots armed dirt bike rider who fled traffic stop in SE Ocala

An armed man was shot by a Marion County Sheriff’s Office deputy on Tuesday night after he fled from a traffic stop in southeast Ocala.

At around 7:15 p.m., a deputy conducted a traffic stop on a dirt bike near the intersection of SE Maricamp Road and Emerald Road, according to MCSO.

The sheriff’s office stated that the driver of the dirt bike proceeded to flee on foot towards a field where a youth sports practice was being held. While running, he allegedly reached for a firearm that was being openly carried on his hip.

The pursuing deputy then shot the suspect, and he was transported to a local hospital in critical condition, according to MCSO.

No further details were released by the sheriff’s office regarding the shooting incident, including the name of the suspect or any charges he might face.

The deputy has been placed on paid administrative leave, as standard practice,” stated MCSO in a social media post.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is currently investigating the deputy-involved shooting incident.
