The life expectancy for residents of Marion County is over four years shorter than the state average, ranking it 49th out of 67 counties in Florida.
The Florida Department of Health shared updated life expectancy rates across the state of Florida last week. According to the report, over the period from 2020 to 2022, Marion County averaged a life expectancy of 73.7 years.
In comparison, over that same period, the state average was 78 years of age, according to the report.
The data also shows that from 2020 to 2022, men across Marion County had a life expectancy of 70.4 years, ranking the county 57th out of 67 counties. The state average for the life expectancy of men during the same period was 75.1 years.
The life expectancy of females in Marion County was 77.1 for the same period, ranking the county 44th out of 67 counties. The average life expectancy for women in the state of Florida was 81.1 years for 2020 to 2022, according to the report.
In comparison, during the period leading up to and including the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the life expectancy in Marion County was 75.4 years. That period, from 2018 to 2020, saw the average life expectancy in the state of Florida at 79.4 years of age, or exactly four years older than the county average.
From 2018 to 2020, the average life expectancy of men in Marion County was 72 years, ranking Marion County 58th out of 67 counties for that period. The state average from 2018 to 2020 was four-and-a-half years older than the county at 76.5 years.
The county also ranked 44th out of 67 counties for the life expectancy of its female residents from 2018 to 2020 at 78.9 years.
According to the United States Centers for Disease Control, the life expectancy across the United States in 2022 was 77.5 years for both sexes (74.8 years for men; 80.2 years for women).
