Ocala’s most famous resident, John Travolta, made a triumphant and deeply personal appearance at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival for the world premiere of his directorial debut, where he was brought to tears with a surprise presentation of a lifetime achievement award.

A lifelong aviation enthusiast, the 72-year-old actor and pilot famously piloted a jet to the festival for the premier of Propeller One-Way Night Coach with his daughter, Ella Bleu Travolta, who stars in the film.

The family-friendly adventure film, which premiered in a non-competitive section on May 15, is an adaptation of Travolta’s own 1997 children’s novel.

The evening proved to be a milestone moment for Travolta, who was not only celebrating his new film but was also moved to tears when he was surprised with a lifetime achievement Palme d’Or for his decades-long contribution to cinema.

Propeller One-Way Night Coach follows a young airplane fan named Jeff, played by Clark Shotwell, and his mother, Kelly Eviston-Quinnett, on a cross-country flight to Hollywood that transforms a simple trip into a magical, life-changing odyssey. Travolta serves as the movie’s narrator and portrays the older version of Jeff, while the cast is rounded out by Olga Hoffmann.

Following the passing of Travolta’s late wife, Kelly Preston, in 2020, Travolta stepped back from his career to focus heavily on supporting his children. The book version of Propeller One-Way Night Coach was originally written and illustrated by Travolta in 1997 for Jett, who later passed away in 2009 at the age of 16 after suffering a medical seizure.

Locally, Travolta’s deep connection to aviation has been a staple of Marion County lore for more than two decades.

Operating out of his airport-style megamansion in the fly-in community of Jumbolair Aviation Estates, Travolta’s property features a private runway that was famously one of the few in the world capable of handling his massive, ex-Qantas Boeing 707 airliner.

For 20 years, the iconic short-bodied jet, nicknamed a “Hotrod,” remained parked in his driveway.

The legendary aircraft recently made local headlines again when it finally began its long-awaited sea voyage to its new home at the Historical Aircraft Restoration Society (HARS) Aviation Museum in Australia, nearly a decade after Travolta generously donated it for historical restoration.
