Marion County residents will have to continue waiting for local access to one of the world’s most popular specialty grocery stores, as Trader Joe’s works on opening two new locations elsewhere in Florida.

Trader Joe’s is currently in the process of opening new locations in Sarasota and Orlando. While an official opening date has not been announced for either location, the new stores will add to the company’s growing footprint within Florida.

There are currently over 600 Trader Joe’s locations across the United States, including 27 stores in Florida. A significant portion of the Florida stores are concentrated in the coastal and central regions of the state.

At the end of last year, the company opened at least two other new grocery stores in Florida in Daytona Beach (Nov. 14, 2025) and Melbourne (Dec. 1, 2025). Since then, it has opened several more stores around the country, including new stops in Kingwood, Texas (Dec. 5, 2025) and Columbia, South Carolina (Dec. 12, 2025), among others.

Despite seemingly perpetual commercial and residential growth, Marion County has not yet attracted the attention of the grocery chain. The closest Trader Joe’s to Ocala remains the location in Gainesville at 3724 SW Archer Road, with other nearby options in Orlando and Winter Park.

The retailer, which was founded in 1958 and purchased by the co-founder of Aldi in 1979, describes itself as a national chain of neighborhood grocery stores that is focused on providing exceptional quality products at the best everyday prices.

Unlike many modern grocery stores, Trader Joe’s does not offer branded items, sales, coupons, loyalty programs, or membership cards. Instead, the company bargains hard to buy directly from suppliers in volume to keep costs low. Each product also goes through a rigorous tasting panel process before hitting the shelves.

For Marion County to successfully attract a Trader Joe’s location, residents will likely have to directly petition the company, as it is a primary method the retailer uses to gauge local interest and viability.

Interested residents can advocate for a store by visiting the Request a Trader Joe’s in My City form available on the company’s website.
