More residents across Marion County wrote in to share their thoughts and concerns on the topic of bringing commercial flights to Ocala International Airport.
“I am commenting on commercial traffic into the Ocala International Airport. I moved to Ocala six years ago from California. In California, we had a severe amount of traffic, and my commute was one hour and 45 minutes each way, every day, to work. When I moved to Ocala, it was to be closer to my parents who live in Summerfield. I love the quietness of Ocala and the lesser amount of traffic, as well, although that does increase every year when the snowbirds come back into town. However, having to drive to the Orlando International Airport on numerous occasions since the move, I would be overjoyed at the thought of commercial traffic coming into the Ocala International Airport. While it may increase some traffic, it would be very beneficial to those of us who travel, or have family and friends come to see us in Ocala. Also, with the building of the World Equestrian Center, which will bring in an influx of people, it would also help to bring businesses into our area, providing for jobs, growth, and additional income for city projects. This would ultimately benefit the residents while providing the convenience of travel,” says Ocala resident Karen Teaster.
“I would love the convenience. When going to Orlando or Tampa, the traffic is horrendous. Please bring the commercial flights to Ocala,” says Karen Sears, Anthony resident.
“I say no to a commercial airport. I had a commercial international airport in the city I came from, but flights always cost more than other cities around us. The cost to taxpayers will raise taxes, not lower them. I agree with several other people when I say this: stop trying to make Ocala like the place you moved from. We moved here because we love this community and how quaint it is. We do not want to change Ocala to the area you are from, especially if you are not a full-time resident. If you need big airport service, I recommend you settle in Orlando, Tampa, Miami, or Jacksonville. Consider this: if I came into your house and changed everything to suit my preferences, I know you would not be happy. So, say no to expanding the airport to commercial flights and yes to keeping Ocala as one of the jewels of Florida,” says Ocala resident Ed Wilt.
“How many new residents moved here to enjoy the beautiful rural area and the quaintness that Ocala has to offer? Are you the ones wanting to disrupt that with more noise, more traffic, and more restaurants? Or is it established residents who want all of this? Just wondering,” says Jackie White, Reddick resident.
