Ocala woman charged with DUI after rear-ending another vehicle

Leslie N. Smith

An Ocala woman was charged with drunk driving on Thursday after rear-ending another vehicle at the intersection of State Road 200 and SW 27th Avenue.

An Ocala Police officer immediately smelled alcohol on the breath of 47-year-old Leslie N. Smith, who admitted to being distracted on her phone when running her brown Kia Soul into the back of the other vehicle, according to the police report.

The officer instructed both drivers to drive into a nearby parking lot, and Smith improperly parked in two parking spaces. She then tried to correct her parking job but only made it worse. Her vehicle was straddling the white line from one parking space and the blue line from the handicap space to the left of her vehicle, the report said.

After determining Smith was at fault in the accident, the officer began a criminal DUI investigation. Smith failed a series of field sobriety exercises and was placed under arrest. Smith was taken to the Marion County Jail, where a breath-alcohol test returned two identical readings of 0.154, according to the report.

Smith was released Friday on her own recognizance and will appear in Marion County Court on Sept. 12.
