Ocala man jailed on strangulation and mischief charges

Romeo Alexander York

A 22-year-old Ocala man was arrested after he allegedly strangled a woman, shattered a window on her vehicle and smashed her iPhone during an outburst on Wednesday.

Romeo Alexander York was charged with domestic battery by strangulation and criminal mischief with property damage between $200 and $1,000 after the incident, which happened at his residence on SW 5th Place.

The victim told a Marion County sheriff’s deputy that York used both hands and choked her by grabbing her by the neck. She said she couldn’t breathe for approximately 45 seconds. The victim showed the deputy marks on her neck, back and right arm from where she said York pushed her onto concrete the previous day, according to the sheriff’s office report.

The victim said York used his right hand to punch the rear passenger-side window of her 2011 Ford. The deputy observed the widow was shattered. She said York also grabbed her iPhone and threw it onto the concrete next to the front door, causing it to shatter. The deputy saw the iPhone was shattered, the report said.

York told another deputy that he and the victim had been arguing for several days and that on Tuesday, the victim tried to run him over several times in her vehicle. He said the victim hit him with a Lysol can under his eye. York said nothing physical happened on Wednesday, according to the report.

A roommate reported that she hears York and the victim arguing but never sees the actual fight. She said she always hears the victim screaming, “Stop hitting me,” but then observes York with injuries, the report said.

York was taken to the Marion County Jail, where he was released Friday on $5,000 bond. He’s scheduled to appear in Marion County Court on May 12.
