Clearwater man busted on battery, burglary and mischief charges

Buster Marion Newton

A Clearwater man with a previous domestic battery conviction is in the Marion County Jail after allegedly breaking into a home, battering a woman and breaking her cell phone.

Buster Marion Newton, 40, was charged Tuesday with burglary with assault or battery, domestic battery (second or subsequent offense), and criminal mischief. The city where the latest incident occurred was redacted in the Marion County Sheriff’s Office report.

The victim told a sheriff’s deputy that Newton came to the residence, broke the window to the back door, reached in and unlocked the door to enter the residence. The victim said Newton then pushed her onto the bed and battered her in the areas of her face, stomach and legs, according to the report.

The victim said Newton grabbed her phone and threw it to the ground, causing the screen to crack. The victim said there was about $80 in damage to the phone. She said she was able to grab the house phone and call law enforcement. The victim said she was not trying to call 911 when Newton took her cell phone, the report said.

The deputy observed the victim had a swollen lip with dried blood. The deputy also observed the back-door window was broken with glass scattered on the floor inside the residence. The victim said Newton left before the deputy arrived. She said the residence belongs to her parents and that Newton has never lived there, according to the report.

Newton returned to the incident location but decline to speak with the deputy about the incident. A criminal history check revealed that Newton was found guilty of domestic battery in Pinellas County in November 2017, the report said.

Newton is being held on $26,000 bond and will face the charges in Marion County Court on May 19.
