Fort McCoy man charged with battery after tiff over slammed door

Clayton Howard Richardson

A 51-year-old Fort McCoy man with two prior battery convictions in Georgia was arrested Monday, the day after he allegedly grabbed a woman by the shirt and tried to pull her off a couch.

The victim told a Marion County sheriff’s deputy that at around 6:30 a.m. Sunday, Clayton Howard Richardson started banging on the wall wanting her to get up and make him coffee. She said when her daughter came home from work, she didn’t shut the door hard enough for it to latch. She then slammed the door to get it to latch, which agitated Richardson, according to the sheriff’s office report.

The victim said Richardson got up, kicked open the bedroom door and started calling her and her daughter names. He then went to the couch where the victim was sitting, grabbed her by the shirt and tried to drag her off the couch. After failing to get the victim off the couch, Richardson got into his vehicle and left, the report said.

The victim’s daughter confirmed the victim’s story and added that her mother kicked Richardson to get him to let her go. She also said there was a red mark on her mother’s chest from where Richardson grabbed her. The deputy didn’t observe any visible injuries on the victim, according to the report.

A criminal records search showed that Richardson was convicted of battery in January 1999 and again in November 2001 in Camden County, Ga. He was charged Monday with battery (second or subsequent offense) and taken to the Marion County Jail, where he’s being held on $500 bond. He is due to appear in Marion County Court on June 16.
