A pair of Ocala women were charged with domestic battery Monday after scuffling with a woman and taking off with her dog.

The victim told a Marion County sheriff’s deputy that 33-year-old Ashley Nieve Marquez and 32-year-old Alicia Louise Marquez came to her house on NW 12th Lane that morning and left after taking her dog in a 2006 Chevy Tahoe with a Georgia license plate.

The deputy saw the vehicle being driven a short time later by Ashley Marquez near the intersection of West Highway 40 and NW 110th Avenue. Ashley flagged down the deputy after pulling into the BP gas station at 11035 W. Hwy. 40. The deputy observed a black and brown Pomeranian chihuahua being held by Alicia Marquez in the passenger seat, according to the sheriff’s office report.

Ashley Marquez told the deputy she was at the victim’s residence the previous day and was advised that the dispute over ownership of the dog was a civil matter and to take civil remedies. She said she went to the home Monday with Alicia Marquez and the victim’s mother to discuss acquiring the dog, the report said.

Ashley Marquez said when they arrived at the home, the dog came out to Alicia Marquez, who picked it up. She said the victim came out of the house and started swinging on them. Ashley said the situation escalated way too quickly, so she and Alicia got into the truck and left, according to the report.

Alicia Marquez said when they arrived at the incident location, she picked up the dog and nothing was said before the victim came out and started hitting her. She said she and Ashley got into the truck and left towards Highway 40, where they stopped at the gas station, the report said.

Interviewed again, the victim said Ashley and Alicia Marquez came to the incident location and picked up the dog after a civil dispute over ownership of it. She said they tried to leave with the dog and she was trying to take her dog back when Ashley shoulder checked her and got into the vehicle. The victim said Alicia then ran up on her and started swinging on her, according to the report.

The victim said she called 911 while Ashley and Alicia left with the dog, the report said.

Ashley and Alicia Marquez were taken separately to the Marion County Jail, where they were both scheduled to be released on their own recognizance. Ashley is scheduled to appear in Marion County Court on May 3, while Alicia is due to appear on May 4.
