A 32-year-old Belleview man was arrested after attempting to steal sweatpants and a t-shirt from an Ocala Walmart.
On Wednesday, November 17, an Ocala Police Department officer responded to the Walmart located at 2600 Southwest 19th Avenue Road in Ocala in reference to a theft.
When the officer arrived, a man later identified as James Phillip Mays had already been detained.
Loss prevention employees told the officer that Mays was observed on security cameras hiding sweatpants inside a personal bag. Mays then walked out of the store without any attempt to purchase the sweatpants.
The officer searched Mays and found an unpaid t-shirt that was concealed in the front of his underwear. A white container was also located in the bottom right pocket of his pants, and it contained a substance that, according to the OPD report, resembled a cotton ball.
A criminal background search on Mays revealed a prior grand theft conviction on October 15, 2013, and a petit theft conviction on July 3, 2018.
Mays did not want to speak with the officer. He was arrested and transported to Marion County Jail where he is currently being held on $2,000 bond.
He faces a felony charge for retail petit theft in the second degree and a misdemeanor charge for possession of drug paraphernalia.
A court date has been scheduled on December 21 at 9 a.m., according to jail records.
