An early morning collision between a pickup truck and a motorcycle claimed the life of a 62-year-old Ocala man on Monday, marking at least the tenth motorcycle-related fatality on local roadways this year.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the fatal incident occurred at approximately 5:50 a.m. on Monday, June 22, at the intersection of County Road 475 and SE 178th Street.
A 71-year-old Summerfield man was driving a pickup truck westbound on SE 178th Street and had stopped at the stop sign at the intersection with CR 475.
As the pickup driver initiated a wide right turn onto CR 475, he entered the direct path of a motorcycle traveling southbound. The motorcycle struck the front left section of the pickup truck, causing the rider to be thrown from the bike.
The Ocala man, who was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. The driver of the pickup truck was wearing a seatbelt and did not sustain any injuries in the collision.
According to a preliminary crash dashboard report from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles through June 19, Marion County had recorded 84 total motorcycle crashes resulting in nine fatalities prior to Monday’s incident. This latest crash pushes that statistic to at least ten motorcycle deaths this year.
The state reports that Marion County had already recorded 42 traffic fatalities across 41 fatal crashes prior to Monday’s collision.
The accelerated rate of deadly accidents puts the county significantly ahead of its 2025 pace, when the area did not reach its 40th vehicular fatality until mid-July.
For context, Marion County recorded approximately 84 traffic fatalities in all of 2025, which was a decrease from the roughly 114 fatalities recorded in 2024.
The state data shows that through June 19 of this year, the county had documented 2,826 total crashes producing 2,443 injuries. Along with the ten motorcyclists, the lives lost on local roads this year include three pedestrians and one bicyclist.
