When should motorists stop for a school bus?

With the new school year kicking off on Thursday, August 10, Marion County Public Schools and the Marion County Sheriff’s Office are reminding motorists to watch out for school buses.

According to MCSO, multiple residents contact the sheriff’s office each year to ask questions about when drivers need to stop or yield for a school bus. Here are the situations when motorists are required to stop for a school bus:

  • When a school bus is stopped on a two-lane road, vehicles traveling in both directions must stop.

  • When a school bus is stopped on a multi-lane road that is paved across, vehicles traveling in both directions must stop.

  • A divided highway consists of an unpaved space (minimum of five feet), or any raised median or physical barrier. Vehicles traveling behind a stopped school bus on a divided highway must also stop, while any vehicles traveling in the opposite direction must proceed with caution.

“Remember to watch for school buses,” stated the Marion County Sheriff’s Office in a social media post. “Our future is riding on them!”
