To the Editor:
I keep reading about Marion County’s efforts to spread the word on illegal dumping. What they don’t seem to understand is the root of the problem: their failure to provide garbage service to all residents.
I recently moved here and I was shocked to hear that the county doesn’t provide garbage service to all county residents. I have lived in other unincorporated areas throughout my life. Every single one of them had waste management services provided by the county. Luckily for me, I have a private yet unreliable company willing to service my area. Without them, I don’t know what I would do with my trash.
Yes, I know there are dumps, but I work 6 days a week with odd hours. I definitely wouldn’t want to load my car with garbage and take an hour of my one day off every week.
The county is getting a heck of a lot of money from all the new development. They need to spend it wisely. I’d even be willing to pay a few more dollars in taxes to make it happen. I guarantee the illegal dumping would stop if everyone had reliable garbage service.
