Two of the greatest speed skaters in the history of the United States made their hometown of Ocala proud during this year’s Winter Olympics, with one stringing together three fourth-place finishes and getting engaged in the process.

Ocala’s own Brittany Bowe took her final Olympic bow on Friday afternoon, finishing in fourth place in the Women’s Speedskating 1500m final at the 2026 Winter Olympic Games in Italy.

The final race was a poignant moment for the four-time Olympian, who stepped onto the ice in Milan knowing it would be her last time competing at this level.

Despite just missing the podium in the 1500m, her performance was a testament to the heart of a champion that has defined her 16-year professional career.

This finish followed fourth-place results in both the 1000m and the Team Pursuit events earlier in these Games, showing that even in her final appearance, she remains among the fastest speedskaters in the world.

For Ocala and the community that supports her, Bowe’s impact far exceeds the medals around her neck.

This year, Bowe set national records with her teammates in the Team Pursuit, and had multiple successful races on the international stage.

Her long legacy also includes being a six-time world champion, a world record holder, and a model athlete who has always exhibited a strong sense of character and selflessness.

That includes the Olympic medalist giving her spot in 2022 to fellow Ocalan Erin Jackson to ensure her friend could achieve her own Olympic gold.

Jackson also delivered an inspiring performance in Milan, finishing fifth in the 500m and sixth in her Olympic debut in the 1000m.

Jackson had the prestigious honor of carrying the American flag during the opening ceremony, an honor that was bestowed to Bowe during the 2022 Olympic Games.

As Bowe says goodbye to the Olympics, she leaves as an inspiration to fans across the world and a hometown hero forever in Ocala.

“Speedskating has shaped me into the person I am, so it’s so sad (to retire), but it’s also so great that I’m able to finish on my own terms,” Bowe said previously.

Following these Games, the athlete plans to pursue a career in mindset coaching to help others achieve their goals.
