Ocala’s most famous resident, John Travolta, made a special appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday, bringing along his newly awarded lifetime achievement Palme d’Or from the Cannes Film Festival.

Travolta, who piloted his own private jet on an 8.5-hour flight to France for the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, sat down with Jimmy Fallon to discuss the emotional surprise of receiving the prestigious honor and to share a scene from his new film, Propeller One-Way Night Coach.

During the late-night interview, Travolta revealed that the lifetime achievement award was a “complete secret” that Cannes festival director Thierry Fremaux had been planning for five months. According to Travolta, Fremaux watched the film, called it “perfect,” and broke precedent by accepting it as the festival’s first selection five months early.

“I cried,” Travolta told Fallon regarding Fremaux’s high praise. “I couldn’t believe that he felt that way, and I was just relieved and glad that he did.”

Propeller One-Way Night Coach, which premieres globally on Apple TV on Friday, May 29, is a semi-autobiographical adaptation of a novella Travolta wrote 35 years ago. The story follows an aviation-obsessed young boy named Jeff and his mother as they take a multi-stop, cross-country flight to Hollywood in 1962 on a budget “propeller, one-way, night, coach” ticket.

Travolta explained to Fallon that he waited decades to adapt the story into a film because it was based directly on his own first flight as a child. “I knew it was too personal and too intimate to let anyone else do it,” he said, explaining his decision to finally write, produce, direct, and narrate the film himself.

The family-friendly adventure also holds deep personal significance for the actor. Travolta originally wrote and illustrated the book version in 1997 for his late son, Jett, who passed away in 2009. Now, the film adaptation stars his daughter, Ella Bleu Travolta, alongside actors Clark Shotwell and Kelly Eviston-Quinnett.

Fallon praised the film’s authentic 1962 atmosphere, highlighting the mid-century architecture, the cinematic soundtrack, and a custom opening animation sequence designed by the artist Shag. The host then debuted a scene featuring Ella Bleu as a flight attendant interacting with the young protagonist.

Beyond his film success, Travolta, whose deep connection to aviation has been a staple of Marion County lore for over two decades at the Jumbolair Aviation Estates, also shared a lighthearted story about a recent encounter with music royalty.

The actor recalled going backstage to meet Ringo Starr at a Florida concert, which led to the two spontaneously singing “I Get By with a Little Help from my Friends” together.

Travolta jokingly noted it was his second time singing with a Beatle, having previously sung with Paul McCartney in a parking lot.
